How to make mc.timer visible

I'm developing a a mod that needs to speed up the timer in Minecraft. I've seen other people do this by using mc.timer, but when I try to do this, I get the error:

The field Minecraft.timer is not visible

Is there anyway to make this field visible?

Reflection is a general Java concept, you can use Google to find out more about it. Just note that you need to use ObfuscationReflectionHelper to find the Field/Method instances for Minecraft fields/methods and use the SRG name. Otherwise your code will not work outside the development environment.
