Forge not found? Crashing on launch, using prism, error code 2, no mods

this is on a clean new instance of 1.21.4 in prism.

- old installs work. i haven't tried editing them.

- changing the minecraft version works, only for 1.20.2. any mods for anything other than 1.20.2 will cause the game to fail to launch.

- i tried switching launhers to neoforge and prism, and got a similar result.

i'm fresh out of ideas.

Try using the vanilla launcher, if it fails post that log

so, say i haven't played vanilla minecraft in a very long time, and i can't find 'minecraft' in my applications folder (i'm on mac), and i've since forgotten what i used to use to access vanilla minecraft. how would i find it?

i did try with a new download of vanilla, and it launched fine.

Then I would say the issue is most likely prism launcher, if using the vanilla launcher works.

Perhaps there is an update for it or something?

the problem is most likely in the settings or incompatibility of Prism with Forge 1.21.4

i did make sure prism was updated, and it is. the issue isn't just with 1.21.4, it's with a bunch of other versions, except 1.21 and 1.20.2.

So I just noticed near the top of the log it says "Launched instance in offline mode", does that mean it is bypassing Minecraft account authentication?

If so, that is probably the issue.

i think it must be the issue, upon further futzing over the past few weeks, but i don't understand how to make it not do that.

i did try to redownload, and with some versions, that *does* work, but only for versions of minecraft i've played before this issue began. since i tend to play minecraft in fits and starts that can be months apart, that's 1.21, 1.20.2, and 1.19.2. for others, it displays minecraft as net.minecraft and on trying to redownload the message says "Null jar is specified in the metadata, aborting."

after the most recent prism update, i got it to download all my instances, but it's still launching in offline mode and i'm very much online.
