How to have armor actively negate a potion effect?

Hey there, just started modding and I have a question that will likely not have a clear answer.

 

I am making new armors and would like them to provide an active negation of potion effects, I understand how to remove potion effects. I just need to know how to have the game keep on top of checking for potion effects on the player wearing the armor, and how to reference that player specifically. Does anyone have any insights?

 

The only mod I know of that does this, is IndustrialCraft2 with the QuantumSuit providing a poison negation effect.
