"FML is setting up Minecraft environment" stuck at 0%

Hi all! I'm having this issue - I've done searches and found others with the same issue and for some it seems to have been solved by a reinstall but that didn't work for me.

The issue is that directly after first installing forge on a clean minecraft 1.4.5, when trying to start minecraft it gets to the "forge is setting up minecraft environment" popup but gets stuck at 0% and doesn't move again at all for at least 10+ minutes.

I'm running Ubuntu 1.10 (actually it's Lubuntu but that's what it says in the terminal - it's my father's computer and I'm not linux-savvy), 64 bit version.

This is what I did:

1. Downloaded latest minecraft (1.4.5) and installed it. By itself it works fine.

2. Downloaded latest forge (6.4.2 446)

3. Extracted forge zip into a folder

4. Opened /.minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar and deleted META-INF

5. Drag-dropped the contents of the forge folder into minecraft.jar

6. Closed minecraft.jar, started game, issue happens.

When it didn't work, I first redid steps 1,5 and 6 twice. Then I googled, found this and put those three into /.minecraft/lib/. That didn't work, so redid whole thing steps 1 to 6, including fresh downloads, and it still doesn't work.

I can't find any error logs either, so I can't really post anything here. Something I found caused it for others was that not all files had been copied. I don't know if they've been or not, as I don't have a proper error log, but the minecraft.jar has 1444 objects in it, the forge zip has 226 objects and the extracted forge folder has 226 objects. And I've redone it once completely - so I don't _think_ that's the issue.

EDIT: It should be noted that I don't know for sure there are no error logs, just that I can't find them - as I'm not linux savvy I don't know if they're put somewhere else, but there's no in the .minecraft folder at least.

Thanks for any aid!

The logs we're looking for are at .minecraft/ForgeModLoader-client-#.log.

Btw, thanks for the well written report. It's quite hard to come by one these days.

There's an EAQ for a reason. Read it!

Oh, and logs OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!!

Try using MultiMC. It's pretty much the best launcher out there, and it's compatible with Linux. It makes things a lot easier.

Protip: try and find answers yourself before asking on the forum.

It's pretty likely that there is an answer.

Was I helpful? Give me a thank you!

Tired of waiting for mods to port to bukkit?

use BukkitForge! (now with a working version of WorldEdit!)
