how to allocate more ram to customized jvm arguments

Recommended Posts

hello, I am making a modpack and Minecraft crashes on startup and tells me that I need to add more ram. I can't see where I need to add more ram to the argument.

jvm argument: -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:+DisableExplicitGC -XX:MaxGCPauseMillis=10 -XX:SoftRefLRUPolicyMSPerMB=10000 -XX:ParallelGCThreads=3

thank you in advance!

Client or Server?

If it's a client the answer will vary depending on which launcher you are using, google is your friend in this case.

Note that Clients almost always handle this for you.

If it's a server that is through the use of two command line switches: -Xmx for max and -Xms for minimum, the form for both is <switch><number><denomination (M for megs or G for Gigs)>

This is my Forum Signature, I am currently attempting to transform it into a small guide for fixing easier issues using spoiler blocks to keep things tidy.

As the most common issue I feel I should put this outside the main bulk:

The only official source for Forge is https://files.minecraftforge.net, and the only site I trust for getting mods is CurseForge.

If you use any site other than these, please take a look at the StopModReposts project and install their browser extension, I would also advise running a virus scan.

For players asking for assistance with Forge please expand the spoiler below and read the appropriate section(s) in its/their entirety.

What to provide:

...for Crashes and Runtime issues:

Minecraft 1.14.4 and newer:

Post debug.log

Older versions:

Please update...

...for Installer Issues:

Post your installer log, found in the same place you ran the installer

This log will be called either installer.log or named the same as the installer but with .log on the end

Note for Windows users:

Windows hides file extensions by default so the installer may appear without the .jar extension then when the .log is added the log will appear with the .jar extension

Where to get it:

Mojang Launcher: When using the Mojang launcher debug.log is found in .minecraft\logs.

Curse/Overwolf: If you are using the Curse Launcher, their configurations break Forge's log settings, fortunately there is an easier workaround than I originally thought, this works even with Curse's installation of the Minecraft launcher as long as it is not launched THROUGH Twitch:

  1. Make sure you have the correct version of Forge installed (some packs are heavily dependent on one specific build of Forge)
  2. Make a launcher profile targeting this version of Forge.
  3. Set the launcher profile's GameDir property to the pack's instance folder (not the instances folder, the folder that has the pack's name on it).
  4. Now launch the pack through that profile and follow the "Mojang Launcher" instructions above.

Posting your mod as a GitHub Repo:

Spoiler

When you have an issue with your mod the most helpful thing you can do when asking for help is to provide your code to those helping you. The most convenient way to do this is via GitHub or another source control hub.

When setting up a GitHub Repo it might seem easy to just upload everything, however this method has the potential for mistakes that could lead to trouble later on, it is recommended to use a Git client or to get comfortable with the Git command line. The following instructions will use the Git Command Line and as such they assume you already have it installed and that you have created a repository.

  1. Open a command prompt (CMD, Powershell, Terminal, etc).
  2. Navigate to the folder you extracted Forge’s MDK to (the one that had all the licenses in).
  3. Run the following commands:
    1. git init
    2. git remote add origin [Your Repository's URL]
      • In the case of GitHub it should look like: https://GitHub.com/[Your Username]/[Repo Name].git
    3. git fetch
    4. git checkout --track origin/master
    5. git stage *
    6. git commit -m "[Your commit message]"
    7. git push
  4. Navigate to GitHub and you should now see most of the files.
    • note that it is intentional that some are not synced with GitHub and this is done with the (hidden) .gitignore file that Forge’s MDK has provided (hence the strictness on which folder git init is run from)
  5. Now you can share your GitHub link with those who you are asking for help.

Jam what? I'm not familiar with this.

I would not recommend messing with the arguments directly unless you know what you're doing.

Just use a launcher, they're there for a reason.

Considering that you are posting on a Forge forum...

There are at least 3 current Launchers you could possibly be using. The majority of mods are on CurseForge, so it is even more likely that you using the TwitchApp for the modpack. Sadly the TwictchApp ignores the modpack developers suggestion on the recommend ram setting and this is therefore a common problem with Twitch packs. Not an issue with MultiMC as that one grabs at least 4Gb by default.

On the Twitchapp, the following instructions are for my World of Dragons mod pack and will work for any other mod pack on TwitchApp as well.

click on view profile

Click the 3 dots button

now click profile options

uncheck Use System Settings

Move the memory slider as far to the right as you feel comfortable. I have a 32GB systems so I moved it all the way to the right. The minimum to run the pack is 3.5GB, 6 to 8GB is a good average.

remember to click ok to finalize the changes and then start the pack.

Using the standard mc launcher to make your private modpack will make maintaining and distributing more difficult than it needs to be. You may have already noticed that.

I strongly suggest using the TwitchApp as it is the easiest. You don't have to publish the pack on Curse either. Just share the export and tell your friends how to set the ram.

As a softer alternative I'd go with MultiMC which leans back towards difficult to maintain.

This is not only for a Minecraft server. This is the same for every Java program. Adding the -Xmx switch to the JVM arguments in the launcher will launch the game with more RAM.

Don't PM me with questions. They will be ignored! Make a thread on the appropriate board for support.

1.7.10 and older versions of Minecraft are no longer supported due to it's age! Update to the latest version for support.

    • Hello. I've been having a problem when launching minecraft forge. It just doesn't open the game, and leaves me with this "(exit code 1)" error. Both regular and optifine versions of minecraft launch just fine, tried both with 1.18.2 and 1.20.1. I can assure that my drivers are updated so that can't be it, and i've tried using Java 17, 18 and 21 to no avail. Even with no mods installed, the thing won't launch. I'll leave the log here, although it's in spanish: https://jmp.sh/s/FPqGBSi30fzKJDt2M1gc My specs are this: Ryzen 3 4100 || Radeon R9 280x || 16gb ram || Windows 10 I'd appreciate any help, thank you in advance.
    • Hey, Me and my friends decided to start up a Server with "a few" mods, the last few days everything went well we used all the items we wanted. Now our Game crashes the moment we touch a Lava Bucket inside our Inventory. It just instantly closes and gives me an "Alc Cleanup"  Crash screen (Using GDLauncher). I honestly dont have a clue how to resolve this error. If anyone could help id really appreciate it, I speak German and Englisch so you can choose whatever you speak more fluently. Thanks in Advance. Plus I dont know how to link my Crash Report help for that would be nice too whoops
    • I hosted a minecraft server and I modded it, and there is always an error on the console which closes the server. If someone knows how to repair it, it would be amazing. Thank you.
