[UNSOLVED] [1.14.2] GUI isn't opening on right click

I was following McJty's modding tutorial for 1.14.2, and I am on the GUI episode. I do what he does, and he runs his game and his GUI opens and functions. When I right click mine, it says: "Error executing task on Server", and "java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException: Unable to construct this menu by type" in the console. I noticed these pieces of code in Container.class.

Instance Variable:

private final ContainerType<?> containerType;

Constructor:

protected Container(@Nullable ContainerType<?> type, int id) {
      this.containerType = type;
      this.windowId = id;
   }

getType Method (which is what I believe is giving me my error?)

public ContainerType<?> getType() {
      if (this.containerType == null) {
         throw new UnsupportedOperationException("Unable to construct this menu by type");
      } else {
         return this.containerType;
      }
   }

Thank you in advance!

Extra: How do you add more slots to a gui and how do you change their position?

Hi,

I've been having this same problem (from the same tutorial), however I may be on to something. Make sure you check all your registry names to ensure that they are correct. For me the error message changed when I went back through and changed all my registry names to be the same thing.

Now I just get: "[Client thread/WARN] [minecraft/ScreenManager]: Failed to create screen for menu type: modid:registryname"

It's not a fix but at least it's no longer an error or even server side according to this.

Its a little bit late for the original post, but i just wanted to "solve" the issue for people having the same problem and looking at this post for help.

So the error comes from not registering the container.

In this specific case its cause u forgot "@SubscribeEvent" at your method for the container registration.

I got the error myself cause i set a registry name ^^.

Can anyone help?

Hopefully this solves it for you. I was just trying to figure out this 'Failed to create screen for menu type' issue that happened to me. I forgot to registered my Container with Screen inside ClientProxy.init().

ClientProxy.java

Spoiler

public class ClientProxy implements IProxy {

    @Override
    public void init() {

        // Initialize your Container and Screen for block UI to appear.
        ScreenManager.registerFactory(<YourBlockContainer>.TYPE, <YourBlockScreen>::new);
    }

    @Override
    public World getClientWorld() {
        return Minecraft.getInstance().world;
    }

    @Override
    public PlayerEntity getClientPlayer() {
        return Minecraft.getInstance().player;
    }
}

ServerProxy.java

Spoiler

public class ServerProxy implements IProxy {

    @Override
    public void init() {
    }

    @Override
    public World getClientWorld() {
        throw new IllegalStateException("Only run this on the client!");
    }

    @Override
    public PlayerEntity getClientPlayer() {
        throw new IllegalStateException("Only run this on the client!");
    }

}

IProxy.java

Spoiler

import net.minecraft.entity.player.PlayerEntity;
import net.minecraft.world.World;

public interface IProxy {

    void init();

    World getClientWorld();

    PlayerEntity getClientPlayer();
}

Make sure you call the client init from within your main mod class in setup(...).

Main.java

Spoiler

public static IProxy proxy = DistExecutor.runForDist(() -> () -> new ClientProxy(), () -> () -> new ServerProxy());

...

    private void setup(final FMLCommonSetupEvent event) {

        ...

        proxy.init();

    }
