I wonder if vanilla has any food items and whether or not that code might be a valuable asset to study.

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable.  If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME.  Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.

Make your item class extend FoodItem.

In 1.14+ food is created with the food builder inside the Food class.

Basically you would do something like this:

 

public static final Food SOME_FOOD = new Food.Builder().hunger(5).saturation(0.5f).build();
public static final Item MY_FOOD_ITEM = new Item(new Item.Properties().group(ItemGroup.FOOD).food(SOME_FOOD));

 

Of course you have to make sure that your item get's registered to the Forge Registry.Register<Item> event as well.
