Is it possible to replace existing items with .OBJ models?

Exactly what the title says.

I'm just curious if it would be possible to allow a user to specify a custom model for an item using a .obj file OR a .json file.

I'm thinking of trying to create a rendering mod that would allow the use of .json files in resource packs, like already exists in the game, but would also allow for a user to have a .obj file if they want more flexibility with how items look.

I want to make sure it would be possible before I start though, since it would require being able to render custom models for existing items. So I want to know: would rendering custom models for existing items be possible without replacing every single item with a custom one?

Yes, just set the name of your item as the same name of the Vanilla and it should work.
