Make a Packet send data to a block?

Hello,

I want to send an update to a Block on the client do need to send the position of the Block too or is there any method that will automatically find the block for me so I dont have to send the coordinates via the Packet ???

 

 

I'm looking forward for any help ;D

is the int changed server side or client side ?

 

if its server side, just call world.markBlockForUpdate(x, y, z); and the rest will happen automaticly

 

by client side i mean, its changed from a GUI or something the server does NOT have access

trust me, make the change to the tile entity, and when its done. call this method. server side it will send the state of the tile entity to the clients, just make sure to implements these method on your tile entity:

 

 

public Packet getDescriptionPacket()

public void onDataPacket(INetworkManager net, Packet132TileEntityData packet)

public void readFromNBT(NBTTagCompound tag)

public void writeToNBT(NBTTagCompound tag)

 

 

if you really dont trust me. just take a look at the gui for the sign and its doing the eeeexact same thign, also take a look at the method markBlockForUpdate

Or you could just code your own packet data (you can literally shove anything into an NBT tag, which can be shoved into a Packet250, which can be sent to the client).

 

And yes.

 

world.markBlockForUpdate() will do what you need.  It specifically makes sure that the client receives the block's current status.

unless you really need it dont make a custom packet, use the method as it will send the update ONLY to players who are affected by it. (aka those close enough)

You can limit who gets packets too.

 

PacketDispatcher.sendToPlayersInRange(packet, distance)

 

(Note: function name guess--I know it exists, but I don't remember the exact name)

yeah of course :P

 

but personally i dont know the exact distance it requires, if you put too big you will send it to player who dont need it (thus putting too much workload to the network), if you put it too small some players might not receive it and use the block in a non-synchronized-with-the-server way

 

plus i mean ... markBlockForUpdate is such an easy method to call ... why not use it ;)

Depends on what you're doing.

 

The one time I used it, I set the radius to about 5 (because it was a BlockContainer and the packet dealt with items in the GUI, which could only be accessed by someone within 4 blocks).  That project is more or less abandoned now, but it was a valid use.

 

Got another project I should finish up that needs some (more) packet-y stuff, and I think that will come in handy there too (TE is out of synch when placed, but interacting with it causes it to update because that is being handled already).

interresting, though if you have something very visual you wouldnt want your players to have to interract with the statue to update the visual

 

lets say hum .. idk  a statue that glows when its ready to give a blessing. you would want players to know immidiately hen the statue is ready. not having to right click it to update it

 

but yeah i would deff use it if it was container related
