1.12.2 varied commodities crash with mithril staff

got a crash attempting to run VC on a server; -
happened when holding right-mouse with the mithril staff in main-hand. i understand these items aren't meant to be (fully?) functional, so this isn't a complaint or anything like, i'm just submitting it in case it's of interest?
