Sometimes when blocks are broken all particles will render completely black and can be seen through blocks. This seems to happen more often on a server, and more often when many blocks are broken in a short time period. Tested on: fresh install of Forge 39.0.5 in a separate installation folder. No resource packs installed, all default settings.
