Crashing on startup -- game overlay problem?

i found the problem to be REI/NEI/JEI... i had to delete it until i get help to resolve whatever is causing this issue. -
I figured out it was JEI i deleted it and installed REI and still getting the exact same issue. i thought these were both client and server side, so i'm not sure why they're having issues.

i'm getting an error that states "The game crashed whilst rendering overlay Error: java.lang.NullPointerException: Registry Object not present: minecraft:empty Exit Code: -1" and it is giving me this report.
