    Add a variant called inventory to your blockstate jsons, and set the variant's model to whatever model you want to display in the characters hand.

    Client-side you can get the game directory from Minecraft#mcDataDir, server-side from MinecraftServer#getDataDirectory(), or you can get it in pre-init with FMLPreInitializationEvent#getModConfigurationDirectory().
