Is it possible to run an older version Forge on an existing server?

I've created my wife and I's first server together and installed a bunch of mods. We like our world, but wanted to experiment with Optifine shaders.  Problem is that Optifine isn't caught up to the latest version of Forge.

Is it possible to downgrade/rollback the version of Forge I'm using on our existing server?  Would I have to create a new server/new world with an older version of Forge for this to be possible?

    Thanks for your answer!  I'll create a backup and give it a try.  Fortunately if I do mess it up, it's only a week's progress lost.
