Server kicks me whenever an item enters my inventory.

I'm putting together a minecraft server 1.16.5 for me and my friends to play on and when I added forge I could no longer have items in my inventory because it would kick me if i did. As soon as an item is in my inventory it kicks me. Whether from creative or survival.
 

Internal Exception: io.netty.handler.codec.DecoderException: java.io.IOException: Packet 0/40 (tm) was larger than I expected, found 1 bytes extra whilst reading packet 40.
