The title says it all, but to make it clear, what's the best Minecraft version to install a great majority of mods?

I'm getting into Minecraft recently and want to play with mods like MCA Reborn and Mine Colonies, but I want to create a modpack with a medieval theme.

If you guys can make some mod recommendations, I would appreciate too.

I'm trying to come up with something that's fun and immersive, to play for multiple playthroughs.
