I'm modifying a class in someone else's mod without the original source code, instead using JDGUI to reveal the obfuscated code. I'm finding however that the mod uses field and func names instead of letter names for classes and methods. I was able to replace all the field and func names with the Forge class and method names in order to get the class to compile and obfuscate, but when it obfuscates I get letter names instead of field and func names and so the .class file does not work when injected into the original mods jar because the rest of the classes in that jar have field and func names. Is there a way to get the field and func name obfuscation instead of letter name obfuscation?

You are probably talking about SRG-obfuscation vs. normal obfuscation. SRG-obfuscated mods use the field_** and func_*** names, making them for example cross-compatible between 1.6.2 and 1.6.4. Just use reobfuscate_srg instead.

It had to be that easy, thank you!
