July 23, 201411 yr public IIcon getIcon(ItemStack itemstack, int pass) Is a method called by renderers that update equipped items. You have to use this: public IIcon getIconIndex(ItemStack itemstack) 1.7.10 is no longer supported by forge, you are on your own.
July 26, 201411 yr To set the icon in inventories, you need to set itemIcon instance variable, also you may need to save your first icon as "itemIcon1" or else you will lose it when you switch to the second icon.
