I see no reason not to use it. It's meant for axis movement, has no negative sideeffects and there's little alternative.

If you want an alternative you can do:

 

  - Override basefunctions of opengl itself(not that I have ever tried it, nor do I recommend it).

  - Move your x, y, z coordinates yourself before you draw the block.

 

Both are utterly stupid and impractical. So just use glTranslate.

No need for an event because there are ample other solutions for that.

Simple example: Boolean CanRotate in tileentity with getter and setter.

In render class simply check that it is true and if you don't want to rotate it anymore just set it to false.

The same goes for a timer.
