I have seen many tutorials but I cannot find where I need to put the textures that I make. Can anyone help me?

<your_forge_folder>/src/main/resources/assets/<your_mod_id>/textures/items/ (for blocks blocks/)

I do not have an assets folder do I just make one?

Yes, you need to create, it doesn't come with forge

If you are using Intellij 14 (which you should) you need to add the following to the end of your build.gradle before importing:

idea { module { inheritOutputDirs = true } }

If you don't do that, your assets will not work. (Thanks to SanAndreasP for finding this solution)
