I have tried everything to download Mods to Minecraft but it won't work!

:( I have downloaded Forge and that is working fine but the mods I download don't appear in Minecraft. I have dragged them into the mods folder and started up Minecraft but that won't work! Every website or youtube video I have viewed has said something different and I am hoping this will work. I have a mac.  >:( >:(>:(
