Running mc 1.8.8 on PC

My kid insists on using a mod for 1.3.2

Every tut on installing forge for 1.3.2 is for old version of mc with a .bin folder - which I don't have.

I tried dropping the contents of the forge archive into the version/1.3.2 folder but nothing works.

how do i use mods in 1.3.2?
