I created a server world using Forge 1.8-11.14.3.1446 and played on it for months with a few others, building up structures, etc...

When 1450 came out, I just downloaded the new universal jar and updated my launch script. There was some artifacts in the jungle biome, but I assumed that was just a bug in minecraft, never tied it to using a different Forge.

Then when 1563 went to recommended, I updated the forge version again, and started getting errors about fluids and blocks in the log, so I reverted to a backup (I wisely had started backing up the server at that point).

My questions: Is there a procedure or best practice to follow in updating a server world to use new versions of Forge? Or should this never be done?
