1.9 Forge Item Render

So I have programmed a little bit of Minecraft. Rendering has changed since 1.7 so I am a little bit confused. Does anyone know another way to do it for 1.9? I found this in one of the mods I was sifting through looking through code:

private static Item registerItem(Item item, String name)

  {

    if (!ConfigHandler.itemBlacklist.contains(name))

    {

        item.setRegistryName(name);

    }

  }

}

Does anyone know of this will work?
