I am a beginner at Minecraft.  Only been playing for 3-4 months.  I started playing because my grandkids enjoy the game so much and it gives use something to do together.  Now I am addicted to MC whether the grandkids are here or not ..... lol

I have been running a Vanilla Survival server on my home network and I wanted to try some of the Forge Mods.

I downloaded and installed Forge with no problems.

I also downloaded a few Forge Mods into my mods folder:

journeymap-1.9.4-5.2.3-unlimited

ReapMod 1.1.1

My question are:

1.  Do I have to have a copy of the mods in my mods folder on my server, and on in the mods folder on my client ?

Thanks for any help.

Forge mods can be universal (required on both the client and server), client-only (only required on the client, may or may not work on the server) or server-only (only required on the server). Single player and LAN both run a server in the background, so you can use most server-only mods on the host client without having to install them on the other clients.

Things like minimaps and HUDs are usually only required on the client, though some can optionally be installed on the server. Admin tools like backups and permission management are usually server-only.

Any mod that adds content (blocks, items, entities, etc.) must be installed on both the client and server.

Most Forge mods are universal, so the download page will usually explicitly say if the mod is client-only or server-only.

Please don't PM me to ask for help. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future.
