[1.7.10] Block colour depending on metadata

I have a block with 8 subtypes, and depending on the metadata I want to change the block's darkness using the colorMultiplier() method. ex.

@SideOnly(Side.CLIENT)
public int colorMultiplier(IBlockAccess iBlockAccess, int x, int y, int z) {
    return 0xe0e0e0 * (meta + 1);
}

I've tried multiple different ways to get the metadata but none work and return 0. How should I go about this?
