Need help with custom mods holding items.

I need my custom mods to hold items. I have ofcourse looked at EntitySkeleton and EntityPigZombie and they use this line of code:

protected void func_82164_bB()
this.setCurrentItemOrArmor(0, new ItemStack(Item.swordGold));

This does not however work on my mobs. I have also tried this:

public ItemStack getHeldItem()
return defaultHeldItem;

private static final ItemStack defaultHeldItem;

defaultHeldItem = new ItemStack(Item.bow, 1);

That way has worked for me in the past but not now. Is there anything i need to add to the mod_x file? Can anyone help me with this?
