Trouble running 1.7.10 mods on forge

Hi,

       I had been wanting to use some older mods from 1.7.10. I set my forge launcher options to the 1.7.10 version and downloaded a few mods for said version. However when I launch Minecraft and start a new world none of the mods installed show up. I have never had trouble using mods with the latest version of forge so what is it I am doing wrong here?
