Null pointer exception keeps getting thrown calling IBlockState

So I'm trying to get the selection box to be colored, that's my first goal at least. I found the source, in RenderGlobal, that governs drawing the selection bounding box. I got my @Subscribeevent handler setup so it actually calls the drawSelectionBox() function.

public void drawSelectionBox(EntityPlayer player, RayTraceResult movingObjectPositionIn, int execute, float partialTicks)
{
LOGGER.info("DrawBlockSelectionBox Begin");
if (execute == 0 && movingObjectPositionIn.typeOfHit == RayTraceResult.Type.BLOCK)
{
LOGGER.info(" ******************* GlStateManager.enableBlend();");
GlStateManager.enableBlend();

LOGGER.info(" ******************* GlStateManager.tryBlendFuncSeparate(GlStateManager.SourceFactor.SRC_ALPHA, GlStateManager.DestFactor.ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA, GlStateManager.SourceFactor.ONE, GlStateManager.DestFactor.ZERO);");
GlStateManager.tryBlendFuncSeparate(GlStateManager.SourceFactor.SRC_ALPHA, GlStateManager.DestFactor.ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA, GlStateManager.SourceFactor.ONE, GlStateManager.DestFactor.ZERO);

LOGGER.info(" ******************* GlStateManager.glLineWidth(2.0F);");
GlStateManager.glLineWidth(2.0F);

LOGGER.info(" ******************* GlStateManager.disableTexture2D();");
GlStateManager.disableTexture2D();

LOGGER.info(" ******************* GlStateManager.depthMask(false);");
GlStateManager.depthMask(false);

LOGGER.info(" ******************* BlockPos blockpos = movingObjectPositionIn.getBlockPos();");
BlockPos blockpos = movingObjectPositionIn.getBlockPos();

LOGGER.info(" ******************* IBlockState iblockstate = this.world.getBlockState(blockpos);");
IBlockState iblockstate = this.world.getBlockState(blockpos);

LOGGER.info("if statement begin;");
if (iblockstate.getMaterial() != Material.AIR && this.world.getWorldBorder().contains(blockpos))
{
LOGGER.info("DrawBlockSelectionBoundingBox Begin");
double d0 = player.lastTickPosX + (player.posX - player.lastTickPosX) * (double)partialTicks;
double d1 = player.lastTickPosY + (player.posY - player.lastTickPosY) * (double)partialTicks;
double d2 = player.lastTickPosZ + (player.posZ - player.lastTickPosZ) * (double)partialTicks;
drawSelectionBoundingBox(iblockstate.getSelectedBoundingBox(this.world, blockpos).grow(0.0020000000949949026D).offset(-d0, -d1, -d2), 1.0F, 1.0F, 1.0F, 1.0F);
}

LOGGER.info(" GlStateManager.depthMask(true);");
GlStateManager.depthMask(true);

LOGGER.info(" GlStateManager.enableTexture2D();");
GlStateManager.enableTexture2D();

LOGGER.info(" GlStateManager.disableBlend();");
GlStateManager.disableBlend();
}
}

All those logger events were put in to trace a crash event. The world would load just fine, but the first time I look at a block it throws this error:

[09:46:11] [main/ERROR] [FML]: Exception caught during firing event net.minecraftforge.client.event.DrawBlockHighlightEvent@1c79e82c:
java.lang.NullPointerException: null

I tried the source of the error to this line of code, which seems to keep throwing a null whenever I look at a block.

            IBlockState iblockstate = this.world.getBlockState(blockpos);

But yet this doesn't happen in in the main RenderGlobal.class. Where am I going wrong?

A) You didn't share enough of the error log (I'm looking for any "caused by" or any "at" that references your code).

B) You didn't tell us what you saw in the debugger when you stopped the program on the verge of the exception and examined this.world.

C) Searching what I can see of your code, I can't see this.world being set, so I'll assume it isn't. That's your problem until you prove otherwise.

The debugger is a powerful and necessary tool in any IDE, so learn how to use it. You'll be able to tell us more and get better help here if you investigate your runtime problems in the debugger before posting.

Oh yeah, the ClientProxy.java is:

package com.fuzzybat23.test1.proxy;

import net.minecraftforge.common.MinecraftForge;
import net.minecraftforge.fml.common.FMLCommonHandler;

public class ClientProxy extends CommonProxy {

	public void registerTickHandler() {
		FMLCommonHandler.instance().bus().register(this);
		MinecraftForge.EVENT_BUS.register(this);
	}
}

And the CommonProxy.java is:

package com.fuzzybat23.test1.proxy;

public class CommonProxy {
	public void registerTickHandler() {
	}
}

You need to assign a value to your world field - if you don't know what that means, you should probably focus on getting the hang of Java basics before working on a mod.

There are also other issues with your code. WorldClient is a client-only class, which means referencing it in in your main class will crash on the dedicated server. In general, you should usually use a world instance that is passed to you in whatever context you're using it, rather than storing your own. In this case you should be able to use the EntityPlayer's world.

I'm trying to revitalize the Custom Selection Box mod from the ground up.  Found the source in RenderGlobal, now I can butcher the original code to get the gui working how I want.  The original coder stopped work on it in vs 1.3, then someone picked it up and updated it to 1.8 and he's not touched it since. Now that I have it functioning at least a little, it mots me way closer than I was before.  Thanks :>  Now I need to figure out why the game doesn't draw the selection box when you're under water xD

Ha! My dark guess (bullet 'C') was right  :)

    • Ok so this specific code freezes the game on world creation. This is what gets me so confused, i get that it might not be the best thing, but is it really so generation heavy?
    • Wizard web recovery has exhibited unparalleled strength in the realm of recovery. They stand out as the premier team to collaborate with if you encounter withdrawal difficulties from the platform where you’ve invested. Recently, I engaged with them to recover over a million dollars trapped in an investment platform I’d been involved with for months. I furnished their team with every detail of the investment, including accounts, names, and wallet addresses to which I sent the funds. This decision proved to be the best I’ve made, especially after realizing the company had scammed me.   Wizard web recovery ensures exemplary service delivery and ensures the perpetrators face justice. They employ advanced techniques to ensure you regain access to your funds. Understandably, many individuals who have fallen victim to investment scams may still regret engaging in online services again due to the trauma of being scammed. However, I implore you to take action. Seek assistance from Wizard Web Recovery today and witness their remarkable capabilities. I am grateful that I resisted their enticements, and despite the time it took me to discover Wizard web recovery, they ultimately fulfilled my primary objective. Without wizard web recovery intervention, I would have remained despondent and perplexed indefinitely.
    • I've tested the same code on three different envionrments (Desktop win10, desktop Linux and Laptop Linux) and it kinda blows up all the same. Gonna try this code and see if i can tune it
