I am attempting to download forge, but every time I download the .jar file and click open it actually opens. I am trying to get the installer to run, but it won't. I just don't know what to do.

    What do you mean with "it opens"?  Do you mean as archive like a Zip file? Just open a terminal and type:  

    java -jar <path/to/installer>
