minecraft world not showing up in the worlds folder

so i had a big minecraft world in my worlds folder that was working yesterday, and i closed minecraft (not sure if minecraft crashed or if i selected the leave game option) and today it's not showing up. the world is in the worlds folder, but doesn't show up in game. i did see there was a stats json file that was blank (while a backup of the world had one that wasn't). could someone tell me what i did so i can fix it? (or at least tell me how to restore the backup created the same day) i would post a log but it was probably overwritten by a newer log (unless minecraft stores all logs)
