I'm trying to download forge so I can download mods for my son.  I'm not totally oblivious to how mods work but I'm still having trouble.  We downloaded Minecraft from the microsoft store but from what I've gathered, (and please correct me if I'm wrong) I have to download the java version of the game?  When I run the install launcher for forge it tells me " There is no minecraft directory set up. Either choose an alternative, or run the minecraft launcher to create one."  So now I'm looking into minecraft launcher and everything points towards the java version of the game.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The version of Minecraft you find in the Microsoft store is "Minecraft for Windows 10", which is not the Java version. The Java version is available from https://minecraft.net/.

Yes I know this.  My question is do I have to use the java version?  If not, how do I get forge to work with this version?  I can't seem to find any information on this.

Forge only supports the Java version.

Thank you!  That's exactly what I needed to know!
