Minecraft modding: Shield model won't render.

I've created a shield model in BlockBench and made sure all the positioning is right and I've put it into the assets folder for the mod. I have  

ModelLoader.setCustomModelResourceLocation(this, 0, new ModelResourceLocation(item.getRegistryName(), "inventory"))

in the correct script and everything is named the correct names yet for some reason my shield will not appear on my character or as an item. It's just invisible.
