i need help updating my forge server

so I have a modded server, a mod that I want to add says it needs a new version of forge, I tried installing a new server and bringing the "forge-1.16.5-36.1.2.jar" over to my server and renaming it to the usual "forgeserver.jar" and deleting the old one and it didn't work
what should I do?
