My bet is that Notch did have JRE 1.5 in mind when making the whole MathHelper class. On Minecraft linking against 1.5, right now the only platforms that would be running 1.5 are very outdated servers or PowerPC Macs running Tiger, so linking against 1.6 leaves behind an insignificant amount of people. Bukkit also links against 1.5, but not the MCPC builds. Getting back on topic, I would like it if Forge included a simple patch to redirect MathHelper to the regular Math calls.
