How to add custom HUD Elements

I was wondering how I would go about adding some text(and maybe some images) onto the HUD, something like this:

The version I'm using is 1.8.9 but hopefully anything before the new Blaze3D engine should work.

Example code is much appreciated.

Configure browser push notifications
Chrome (Android)
  1. Tap the lock icon next to the address bar.
  2. Tap Permissions → Notifications.
  3. Adjust your preference.
Chrome (Desktop)
  1. Click the padlock icon in the address bar.
