I'm using the following mods:

Zan's Minimap

 

Signs are blank even when I type stuff, happens both single player and multiplayer

    I had this problem, I also am running optifine and rei's minimap, but I installed forge 867 into the client and it seems to be working fine now.

    LexManos: Fix bug where guis were not closed properly, resulting in signs not having there text set.
