[1.8.9] Minecraft.getMinecraft() does not exist

I am trying to draw some text on the screen via Minecraft.getMinecraft().fontRendererObj.drawStringWithShadow("test"); and I call it upon the RenderGameOverlayEvent event.

It works fine when I run the mod via the runClient task, but when I compile it, put it in my mods folder and join a world, it crashes with this error:

java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: net.minecraft.client.Minecraft.getMinecraft()Lnet/minecraft/client/Minecraft;
