How do I get the launcher to work on my windows laptop?

Whenever I go to start the launcher, it directs me to open it through other applications on my computer. I attempted to follow a tutorial on youtube, on his it is labeled as an "Executable JAR File" but mine has it as just a JAR file. I know that I'm supposed to open the file to get the launcher to install, but I cannot get the file to open. Does anyone have any solutions?
