Using plugin channels to get Forge and Bukkit talking

Hey guys,

 

I need to send and recieve data between Forge and Bukkit for an integration plugin I'm working on. From what I've heard, Plugin Channels MAY be the way to go.

 

However, I can't find any examples of them in use.

 

What I need to do is send a request from one side to the other to find out a double value, then send the relevant data back. For example, Forge asks Bukkit for the balance double, and Bukkit sends the balance back to Forge.

 

From what I've read, though, these plugin channels may only be used on actual login? Is this true - if so, does anyone have any better ideas?
