Im trying to make my lasers render like the lightining bolt does, but facing the right direction.  I have tried to do this, but it shoots vertical bolts instead. 

That's too little information to help you. Please elaborate.

If you want your lasers to look like lightning bolts, I suggest looking at RenderLightningBolt and making sure you understand how it works - it can be very helpful to rename the variables to something meaningful - and then modifying the code so that it steps along in the x and/or  z coordinates instead of the y coordinate.

 

BTW tessellator.startDrawing(5) is actually

tessellator.startDrawing(GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP);
