So since stuff like iconString and unlocalizedName are protected and there isn't an easy way to get those (plus I'm not sure if Bukkit gives those items another name then default, then this value might differ), is there maybe a way to compare the itemIcon property?

Isn't getUnlocalizedName() public? And why are you worried about bukkit compatibility?

Because my mod is mostly used on multiplayer servers I have to account for the fact that the item in question can sometimes have a different name etc.

MinecraftForge mods can't be run in a Bukkt environment, so you don't have to worry about that.

Yes they can if you use MCPC+/Cauldron. What are you trying to do that requires comparing icon names? Would unlocalized names work instead?

ipsq, getUnlocalisedName() will return the name that the mod or minecraft game assigns it, the names of items that have been renamed in-game are stored in a displayName string on the itemStack container. The contained item's unlocalised name will be a constant still. (unless I'm misunderstanding your requirements)

If you really need to though, you could probably test the path of the resource referenced by IIcon and compare that but it's probably unnecessary.

Also, Lars, with Cauldron, that's no longer strictly true, although it can cause all kinds of issues, it is at least theoretically feasible to write a mod that leverages both frameworks.
