[1.7.10] Drawing text in existing vanilla GUIs

So, all I want to do is draw some text to the side of the player inventory screen. I thought I did it correctly like this:

public class TickHandlerClient {

@SubscribeEvent
public void renderTick(RenderTickEvent event) {
	Minecraft mc = Minecraft.getMinecraft();
	GuiScreen screen = mc.currentScreen;

	if(mc.theWorld != null) {
		WorldClient world = mc.theWorld;

		if(event.phase == Phase.START) {
			if(screen instanceof GuiInventory) {
				mc.fontRenderer.drawString("TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT", 176, 166, 4210752);
				System.out.println("Rendered Text");
			}
		}
	}
}
}

But, only the printout runs in the console. So what am I doing wrong?

I am not a cat. I know my profile picture is sexy and amazing beyond anything you could imagine but my cat like features only persist in my fierce eyes. I might be a cat.

Are you sure your text isn't rendered behind the GUI?

Use event.phase == Phase.END and see if that works.

This thread makes me sad because people just post copy-paste-ready code when it's obvious that the OP has little to no programming experience. This is not how learning works.
