I would like to change the hue of one or more nearby blocks. I do not mean my block, but vanilla blocks, or other mod blocks. I would like to leave the form and texture intact, but modify the hue, for example,  make it more red. I also mean a temporary, in game change, not a resource pack edit. Something like an translucent overlay for a list of blocks.

How would you do this in 1.8?

I am not the one to make 100% true statement, but I am almost sure that it's not possible without very hacky coding. Most likely ASM. I've read everything I could find about rendering blocks since 1.8 release, and never in past months stumbled upon anything that might allow to change vanilla rendering without hijacking whole system.

But then again - it's just my speculations.

1.7.10 is no longer supported by forge, you are on your own.

Basing off what Ernio said, the only way you may be able to do this is to make your own lightmap and have your block emit your light. This way you can create a shaded "overlay" that would be projected onto the blocks. When I say this I am referencing how the lighting system works in vanilla Minecraft which has a slight yellow hue to it. I cannot say however that this IS possible, but it may be worth looking into if it is.

This is the way the Colored Lights mod works, so you might be able to do it the same way his mod does, or use the mod's API.

1.7.10 and older versions of Minecraft are no longer supported due to it's age! Update to the latest version for support.
