Depends on what you are talking about. Forge reads from jar's and zips the same(jar are actually zipped anyways). There is no difference if the mod is zipped or jarred, its all preference, however 'jar mod' usually refers to mods that go into the .mincraft/bin/minecraft.jar, instead of using a mod loader and loading the mods from the mods directory.
