I'm trying to make a sword which applies a certain potion effect to anything it hits, but I don't know where to start. Is there an OnHit method?

Also, what package is the standard sword class contained in in Referenced Libraries?

You are looking for net.minecraft.item.ItemSword - extend it, override #hitEntity and apply potion effect to target with entity#addPotionEffect.

 

Don't forget to call super.hitEntity as it damages item when attacking.

1.7.10 is no longer supported by forge, you are on your own.
