[1.7.10] Using a non-standard asset location with ResourceLocation [SOLVED]

Hello all.

I'm working on a new mod which has an asset system (a little like Flans and MCHeli do). However, I've hit a bit of a snag.

I've got items loading into the game just great, but I can't apply textures or models to them.

They are using a custom item renderer with an .obj model - and both the .obj and the relevant texture require a ResourceLocation to be loaded. However, because I want my mod to easily support third party assets without any custom code, I'm not using the normal /assets/modid/blahblahblah folder but instead a custom folder in .minecraft/

Is there any way I can access that area with a ResourceLocation?

Apologies if it's something obvious I've missed, been working on this for a few hours straight so my brain is probably a bit frazzled, just wanted to get this last bit done before calling it a day :P
