So I have been following

(a 1.8 modding tutorial) and encounter above exception. I have intermediate knowledge of java and therefore tracked the cause of the NullPointerException.

 

I'm thinking it is this line:

GameRegistry.registerItem(test_item, test_item.getUnlocalizedName().substring(5));

which means that test_item is null. I initialize it though as a new item... here's my class that it is in.

The NPE is from the rendering registration, not your item registration, because the model mesher is null during the pre-init phase; just move it to the init phase and it will work.

 

However, you should only be calling the rendering registration method through your proxy anyway, not directly, as any reference to a client-only class (e.g. ALL rendering classes) will crash a server if you try to run it there.

Glad to know that it wasn't something I made that was null.

 

I registered the renders in the initialization stage now but my console got spammed with this:

OMMModItems.registerRenders();

That is calling it directly from your main class. Only the proxy (ClientProxy, in this case) should call that method.

 

proxy.registerRenders();

That line is fine, as it would do nothing in the server proxy, but ClientProxy should override it to make all necessary rendering registrations, either from within the CP itself or by calling other methods such as the first one, e.g.:
