I was trying to add custom tooltips for vanilla items using the ItemTooltipEvent but I keep getting "field has private access in SomethingEvent" whenever I try accessing any field of the event. I tried some 1.8 event handler tutorials but with no success either. All the other handler methods keep throwing the same error.

Handler class is called TooltipHandler registered from CommonProxy in init() on MinecraftForge.EVENT_BUS

Forge version: 12.16.0.1813

Is this just because of the beta state of Forge or am I doing something wrong?

Most event fields were made private with public getters in 1.9-12.16.0.1805. Use the getters.

Please don't PM me to ask for help. Asking your question in a public thread preserves it for people who are having the same problem in the future.

I somehow managed to get my Forge version out of sync with the IDE (idea) files. IDE showed the fields were public and there were no getter methods but gradle didn't want compile it because it was on a different version.

After deleting everything and setting the workspace up again it works.

Thanks :)

After every Forge update, make sure to run

gradlew eclipse

to set the workspace up with the new Forge version. Else, you get desynch issues like you had.

Don't PM me with questions. They will be ignored! Make a thread on the appropriate board for support.

1.7.10 and older versions of Minecraft are no longer supported due to it's age! Update to the latest version for support.
