Custom Arrow Problems (1.7.10)

I am struggling to figure out why when i shoot my custom arrow it seems to collide with my player and ends up rotating so that it is side on when it collides with a block.

Any help would be very useful. Also please include any tutorials for custom bows/arrows as i have not found that many useful ones.
